October 1 | Las Vegas

One year ago, tragedy struck close to home whenever hundreds upon hundreds of innocent lives were changed, and 58 were lost, at the Route 91 Harvest Festival here in Las Vegas.

About a week after the shooting, my husband and I took our kids downtown to visit the memorials. I posted some of the pictures from that morning privately, but words to describe them have been hard for me to find, so I hadn't shared them in this forum yet.

I still don't have the words to describe the powerful sights I witnessed that week throughout my community, but this is what I wrote last year...

We woke the kids up early this morning to take them to visit a couple of the memorials in town. We arrived at the Welcome to Las Vegas sign just as the sun was starting to come up, and it was a powerful sight. The parking lot was full, but the crowd was silent. We walked slowly and quietly along the line of crosses, but part way through I pulled the kids aside because I wanted to make sure they understood that despite the tears and broken hearts, we were looking at a whole lot of love. Every candle, every flower, every toy, balloon, and card was placed there with love, and it was beautiful. - 10/08/2107
